Law Comes to Africa: AIDV Heads to Stellenbosch Spoor＆Fisher - 15 10月 2026 This October, the world of wine law is coming to South Africa. From 16 to 18 October 2026, the *Association Internationale des Juristes du Droitde la Vigne et du Vin* ([AIDV](https://www.aidv.org/conferences/aidv-conference-2026-stellenbosch/)) – the International Wine Law Association – will host its annual conference in Stellenbosch, marking an exciting opportunity for wine professionals from around the world to experience South Africa as a wine region first-hand. And there could hardly be a more fitting setting. Stellenbosch is at the heart of South Africa’s wine industry. Surrounded by vineyards, historic estates and some of the country’s most recognisable wine-producing regions, the town offers a natural backdrop for conversations about the legal, commercial and intellectual property (IP) issues shaping the global wine industry. ## AIDV Conference 2026 The conference will bring together international wine lawyers, industry professionals and academics to explore a range of issues affecting the sector, from geographical indications, trade marks, labelling, sustainability, regulation and the protection of wine-related IP. For South Africa, hosting an event of this nature is particularly significant. The country has a long and distinctive wine-making history, an increasingly global wine industry and wine laws that raise many of the same issues being discussed around the world. At the same time, this provides an opportunity to bring an African perspective into a conversation that has traditionally been dominated by European and other established wine producing jurisdictions. The programme will also provide an opportunity to hear from South African speakers and to consider some of the issues facing the local industry. For practitioners working at the intersection of wine, business and intellectual property, these discussions offer a valuable opportunity to consider how legal frameworks can support innovation, protect reputation and preserve the identity and heritage associated with wine. Of course, a conference in Stellenbosch would not be complete without experiencing some of what makes the region so special. Delegates will be hosted at Lanzerac Wine Estate, one of Stellenbosch’s historic wine estates, where the programme will extend beyond the conference room. Alongside the formal discussions, attendees will have the opportunity to experience the Winelands, including tasting wines made from certified heritage vineyards, and the food, scenery and hospitality for which the region is known. Wine brands are built on far more than what is inside the bottle.
