# ARIPO Joins the Global Patent Prosecution Highway (GPPH)

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) has joined the Global Patent Prosecution Highway pilot (GPPH) programme, effective 6 January 2026.

ARIPO now provides three options for Expedited/Accelerated Examination:

- Request for accelerated examination under the Patent Prosecution Highway pilot programme with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) (from 8 June 2024 to 7 June 2029. ARIPO and CNIPA may extend the pilot period if necessary);

- Request for expedited examination; and

- Request for accelerated examination under the Global Patent Prosecution Highway pilot programme (currently there are 29 Offices participating in the Global PPH).

The 29 Offices participating in the Global PPH are: Austria, ARIPO, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Hungary, Israel, Chile, Peru, Brazil, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Iceland, Japan, South Korea, Norway, Nordic, Spain, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Russia, Colombia, United Kingdom, USA and Visegrad.

The purpose of the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) system is to fast-track the processing of patent applications and reduce overlapping examination work in different patent offices. The PPH means that when an applicant has filed a first application with one office and received a positive opinion that the claims are allowable, they may request fast-track processing when filing a corresponding application with a second office.
