# Grenada joins the Madrid Protocol

Grenada deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol on 15 December 2025, and it will be possible to designate Grenada in an International registration from 15 March 2026 onwards.

However, Grenada is a common law country, which means that, in order for an international treaty to have effect, it must be expressly and specifically transformed into municipal law by enactment of the national legislature. The Grenada Trade Marks Act has a ‘general clause’ that deals with the relationship between international treaties and domestic legislation, but there is no reference in the Act to the Madrid Protocol, and it is debatable whether the general clause alone can provide an adequate statutory framework for the enforcement of Madrid rights locally.
