[Marco Vatta](https://spoor.com/our-people/marco-vatta/), Partner at Spoor & Fisher, recently featured on [MUT Radio,](https://iono.fm/p/2206) highlighting the unique and highly specialised field of patent law in South Africa. The interview followed his presentation at the WIPO Summer School, which provides young professionals, senior students, and innovation specialists from across the world with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the various domains of intellectual property and its role in economic empowerment. Marco delivered a session on inventions, patents, and patent protection across the African continent, sharing his experience and insights into the evolving IP landscape.

In the interview, Marco explained the role of Spoor & Fisher as Africa’s largest dedicated intellectual property law firm and specifically his role as a patent attorney. The patent attorney profession remains one of the most technical areas of legal practice, requiring both a scientific or engineering background alongside a law degree.

He also discussed the importance of protecting innovations across the African continent (and patents in Africa in general), noting the region’s rapid growth, rising population, and expanding markets. The conversation touched on Africa’s strong patent jurisprudence, the arbitration of many IP disputes before reaching the courts, and the essential role of effective enforcement in ensuring creators receive fair reward for their work.
