Closer to home, innovation and advancement within Africa’s healthcare industry promises to create significant impact for many countries, with new technologies and inventions potentially transforming African healthcare from the ground up. This industry is understandably among the most regulated, with rapidly changing rules that often differ between countries. Other challenges include rising research and development costs, loss of patent protection, clinical trials, pricing pressures, and rigorous competition. In addition, the continent faces unique infrastructural challenges, a high disease burden and difficult socio-economic conditions – but these can and do give rise to opportunity and innovation from inventors in Africa. Our Healthcare, Therapeutics and Medical Technologies team has broad experience in drafting and prosecuting patent and design applications for medical devices and technologies, such as immunoassay diagnostic devices and aptamer-based diagnostic devices, for example. A multi-disciplinary team, it draws on the skills and experience of our patent attorneys in the Engineering and Chemical and Life Sciences departments, to assist our firm’s clients with the protection of inventions and registered designs in the medical field.
